I am not one to blog or LJ much. I hate to stick my neck out and I'm not a rock the boat kind of person, however in the view of the election results and the subsequent blog/lj entries I read, I have to write down my thoughts.
First the good news:
In case anyone has missed this fact, there was a record amount of voters this election year in the US. People from both side of the political spectrum came out in huge numbers to vote.
I am proud of how the young people, aka first time voters got involved in the process. In my state I saw far more people going door to door, campaigning for their candidate. The adage is true, if you don't vote you can't complain about the outcome. We may hear complaints about the result but at least millions got out to vote.
Another bit of good news is that both Senator Kerry's and President Bush's speeches on Wednesday were classy. The call to come together to meet common goals and needs was clear from both men. I had expected no matter the outcome to hear rancor and possibly lawsuits in protest, but we didn't get that. We had enough negative campaigning, so I'm happy to see that end.
Now for the bad news and my disappointment:
I am disappointed with the way that many people, several of whom I consider my friends, from other countries are not just quick to criticize but they resorted to name calling and to insults. I understand that these people are frustrated and upset at the outcome, but it doesn't help their point of view when they label Americans, "stupid," "idiots," or "morons." I must point out that those who choose cutting insults are also insulting like minded Americans as well.
I admit that the bitterness aimed at me by way of my citizenship stung more than I expected since it often came from my friends in the online community. Please remember that human beings are reading your posts, some are your friends, and not nameless, faceless "countries" I'm an American, and when you call all of us bigoted morons, you're calling me that as well.

Yeah, I'm sick of it too. And oh, joy, I have to live with that attitude all around me...

"I don't like president Bush," is an emotional opinion.
"I don't like president Bush because of his policy on _________," is a substantive opinion.
"Americans prove their stupidity once again," is an ethnocentric, derogitory statement.

in fact i'm pretty sure i said in my entry that i didn't mean it as a generalization. half of us were joking anyway... unfortunately, when telling people that bush was about to be reelected, most ppl's first reaction was "ARE THEY INSANE?"
i'm sorry if as you said it hurt someone but it was just a joke and a good dose of disbelief. if you'd rather i take it down then i will, but i mean since we were all saying that in a hub with a bunch of americans and they didn't take offense - in fact saying the same thing themselves, i should hope it's not too much of a problem, but i do understand everyone's different.
as for ethnocentric, derogatory statements, i am *not* going there. :P

Clearly you recognized your actions in Jade's statement. Nobody mentioned your name. You did that.
And one more thing (and I can't believe I'm using this old cliche), LJ is public. MSN is public. Apparently you want the right to state your opinion in public and ask everyone to give up their right to state their opinions.
Not going to happen.

Secondly, as for the but. I was TRYING to be polite, since that is how people say it. Alternate forms are "with all due respect", and "not to be rude". You know exactly what I was trying to say - I could have told you to "butt out", but I'm not like that, and I don't think like that. Instead, I asked you politely to let me and Jadie discuss this. I don't see how that is offensive. And it certainly has nothing to do with my not taking responsibility for it. It's simply a figure of speech.
As for the public thing? My entry was friends only locked, because it had some other ramblings about my thoughts on career choices in it, and you're not on my MSN list. Therefore, may I point out that it was *not* public. Not telling anyone to give up their opinions either - you're welcome to them. However, since it was Jadie who brought this up, then since it is she who is apparently upset, then it is her whom I should be discussing this with. Notice that I'm not telling her to give up her opinion either - simply to come directly to me if she has a problem. As you may also notice, I said above that I understand everyone is different, which implies a different opinion. Please don't twist my words.

I'm far from happy about the election results. That said, I don't agree with most LJ entries I've read.
